Meet the Coach

Cornelius Grobler

I was born and raised in South Africa, where life was anything but easy.  Due to challenges at home, I attended nine different schools and was enrolled in my first boarding school at the age of nine—my parents separated when I was four, and I grew up under the roof of two different stepfathers, both of whom I struggled to connect with because of their aggressive nature and values. I didn’t want to follow in their footsteps. I was also bullied at school, and over time, violence started to feel like the only way to survive. I was robbed six times—most often on my way home from school—and I often felt helpless and angry, wishing I had someone to run to.

Boxing became that outlet for me. I took up the sport to learn how to defend myself—but also because I fell in love with it. Sport was my escape, my safe place, and my foundation for building something positive when everything else felt uncertain. By age 13, I was thriving in athletics, rugby, and cross-country.  I was honoured as the Sports Boy of my school and received scholarship offers from several high schools in my region to represent them in sport. That was when I discovered the joy of achieving something through discipline and passion—something no one could take from me.

Later, after moving to New Zealand, I chased my dream with relentless focus. I became the New Zealand Welterweight National Champion and was honoured as the Senior Mid Canterbury Sports Person of the Year. But more important than the titles was the clarity I gained about my purpose. I had always craved after a father figure—someone to guide, support, and believe in me. That pain became my mission: to become that person for the next generation. I began mentoring youth, sharing not just boxing skills but life lessons grounded in respect, authenticity, and love. My Pastor in New Zealand was/is my mentor and father figure that helped shape my values, and through my faith in God, I found healing, purpose, and a greater reason to serve.

I retired undefeated in 2015 after winning the National title and early 2016 opened Mid Canterbury boxing Academy with a fantastic team that shared the same vision and heart for helping our youth and community. Since then (period of 8 years), I’ve coached over 50 boxing champions and mentored thousands of young people through boxing and school-based mentoring and boxing programs. I’ve worked in six schools across my region since 2016, walking alongside students in their daily lives, offering support, guidance, and hope. Many of those kids still stay in touch years later—and every time I see them thriving, it reminds me why I do this.

Supporting youth is not a job—it’s a calling. Champions for Pilbara strives towards giving the kids, the kind of support I once longed for in my youth. Through Boxing, discipline, and our 13 Life Values, we want to help young people grow stronger—not just in the ring, but in life. And with the help of sponsors, we can continue to be a life-changing force for the youth of this region.
